Sonic dynastyfused with high-tech destiny

You’ll never look at your bookshelves the same. … or wherever else you decide to place these uncannily adept JBL® loudspeakers. As part of the new 10-piece JBL Studio 2 loudspeaker series, the Studio 220 bookshelf speaker was built to speak the languages of both legacy sound and forward-thinking technology. Tested relentlessly in the world’s most advanced sound research lab – our own – as well as pitted against competitors in real world comparative listening studies, we’ve engineered this loudspeaker to go above and beyond. We incorporated a front-firing 4” PolyPlas midrange speaker and a rear-firing Slipstream bass port that envelop listeners in tight, accurate bass. We always could have stopped there – but that’s not the JBL way. We took other design cues from our work building the world’s most legendary recording studios, giving our Studio 220 the kind of performance sound normally found at cinemas and multiplexes: a 1” CMMD® Lite high-frequency driver that ensures low-distortion, and a High Definition Imaging (HDI) waveguide design that offers pinpoint sound imaging and studio-grade balance. Then we topped it off with seductive features like gloss black paneling, soft rounded edges, and your choice of either Black or Espresso wood-grain finish. We ran wild with sound and vision, combining the power and precision of high-tech audio with the sleek urbanity of “it-factor” design. For those able to hear the truth, we’re confident you’ll hear it full volume – at first listen.

Studio 220 is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 8.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great sound, small footprint These replaced some old bookshelf’s used as rear surrounds. Highs are very crips and clear, and the 4” has just the right amount of bass. After EQing the room the audio sweet spot has opened up quite a bit for a better sounding experience. Fantastic sound from a small speaker!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Studio 220 2-way 4" Bookshelf Speakers I bought these speakers about a month ago. I needed a new pair of speakers (as surrounds) for my audio/ video system. I have had many years of experience with JBL so I didn't need to look further than JBL for this purchase. I have a pair of JBL L110s that I purchased new 40 years ago (I had them re-coned about 10 yrs ago) that I use as the front/ main speakers and still sound perfect. I also have a 10" Sub and a JBL HLS center speaker, and needed to upgrade the surrounds. Enter the Studio 220s. The 220s are a perfect compliment to my system. Their sound is very clear and defined and defy their small size. I was also considering the Studio 230s, which are a little bigger but I couldn't pass up the sale on the 220s. I could not be happier. These little speakers can handle plenty of power, and sound much bigger than their size. Technology has changed over the years but JBL still produces top quality speakers. The critic in me has only one small complaint. The top surface of the speakers is made of black plastic. I don't know if this material contributes to the performance or has some other design function but is does cheapen their appearance somewhat. However, with the speakers on a bookshelf, the plastic isn't really visible. I would have rather seen the top of the speakers match the rest of the external surface. Overall, I still give them five stars. Thank you JBL.

Can Yamaha A-S301BL power amplifier suppor JBL 220 speakers? If not, which amplifier you can recommend?

Asked by: Monkey
Yes, the STUDIO 220 speakers can handle up to 125 watts per channel. Any receiver with a power output of 125 watts per channel or less will work fine with these speakers.

how much do they weigh and what is the difference in sound are they then the es230

Asked by: jazzman
Each speaker weighs 17.4 pounds. It's difficult to describe a difference in sound. While the ES230 speakers are considered to be a higher quality speakers (3-way designed as opposed to 2-way, higher wattage rating, greater frequency response), there are many that say the STUDIO 230 sounds better. You see, sonic preference is a matter of opinion. Some felt the ES230 had too much high end, where others love it. I'm sorry the answer is not more decisive.

Hi I have just upgraded system with the addition of the Studio SUB 260P. Have a Control Now as a centre speaker and Control Ones as the L, R Surround R and L and Rear Surround R and L. Would it be worth upgrading the L and R to these?

Asked by: Dale2017
Hi, and thank you for supporting JBL! Your Control Now and Ones are fine speakers, but the Studio 2 models are better. Before upgrading some of the channels, do bear in mind that it is also important to have a fairly uniform audio balance from all channels, so you may consider going for Studio 2 speakers in all channels at some time.

Will these speakers work with a McIntosh 1700? Also, I have a Harmon/Kardon AVR 25 and I need speakers for that receiver also if these would also work for the Harmon/Kardon. Thank you for your help.

Asked by: honeyjean
The Studio 220 handles up to 125W at 8 ohms. If the McIntosh drives between 20-125W at 8 ohms then it would work with the Speaker. The AVR 25 also works with the speaker since it drives 75W at 8 ohms.

which is the power consumption of both speakers?

Asked by: santos10
Hi! Power consumption is the amount of power an electrical component draws from it's battery or power outlet. Being that the STUDIO 220 is a passive speaker, it does not have a Power Consumption rating. It can handle up to 125 watts of audio power, but the power consumption comes from the amplifier or receiver that is driving the speaker. You can get this specification from the amp or receiver manufacturer.

Asked by: Kritter Guy
Yes. Most of our speakers use speaker wires to get connected to an amplifier or receiver.
